JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

JPG, PNG and WebP are useful in different situations. Choosing the format based on the image and destination can avoid unnecessary file size.

JPG

JPG is commonly useful for photographs and other images with many colours. Very aggressive compression can create visible artifacts.

PNG

PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency, but photographs can become much larger than equivalent JPG files.

WebP

WebP offers modern web-friendly compression. Check that the receiving website accepts WebP before converting an upload.
