How to Reduce Passport Photo File Size

Many applications specify both photo dimensions and a maximum file size. The correct workflow is to follow the destination's exact instructions rather than guessing a universal passport-photo size.

Read the destination rules first

Check the application page for required pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, file type and maximum KB. Different forms can use different requirements.

Crop only when required

If the source photo has excess background, crop to the required aspect ratio before resizing. Avoid stretching the image to force it into a different shape.

Resize the photo

Use the Image Resizer to set the required pixel dimensions and keep the aspect ratio when appropriate.

Reduce the file size

If the final file is still too large, use the Image Compressor and set a target such as 100 KB when the application specifies that limit.

Verify before uploading

Check the final width, height, file type and KB size. Keep the original photo so you can make another version if the application rejects the first one.
